Portable Heater - Kerosene or Diesel
This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) / TA covers hazards and controls associated with the use of a portable Oil ( kerosene / diesel) Heater.
This type of heater is often used in construction to assist in the drying out of internal work areas / framing. Also used in work places and events for heating.
Safety Advice
- Carbon monoxide is an odourless & colourless gas generated using these types of heaters. Refer to equipment instructions for adequate ventilation requirements.
- Carbon monoxide may cause a range of symptoms including headache, nausea and vomiting, flushing, muscle pain, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, coordination difficulties, confusion, or chest pain if inhaled.
- Symptoms of poisoning are non-specific and can be mistaken for a flu-like illness or even food poisoning. Very high levels of carbon monoxide can cause loss of consciousness, seizures and death.
